Ideal Reading and Writing Experiences

The most ideal reading experience I could possibly have would include first, and foremost, focus. When I can zero in on a book I am content and happy. Generally when I am in a good reading spot, sitting in one place for hours is natural and enjoyable. In this time, I am fully engaged in a book and can actually visualize everything that I am reading. Alertness is also necessary for a great reading experience where energy can help me to stay attentive to the details. Time is also important because I do not like to rush through reading. I carefully try to understand and reflect on the reading from the beginning to the end. A utensil, preferably a pencil, allows me to process better through my reading; so I would not leave it out unless I am forced to do it (i.e. borrowing Dr. Giles book was hard because I desperately wanted to write in it. Her name in the front reminded me to resist the urge). These are really the only things I need to have the best reading experience because the book takes care of the rest.

My favorite writing experiences usually happen through creative writing. I love poetry, short stories, fiction, non-fiction, blogs and more. The only writing I dislike would be papers whose requirements squeeze out creativity (i.e. history/research papers and most school assignments). My best writing experiences all involve inspiration, confidence, determination, and support. These drive my passion for writing. Generally the inspiration and support come from other people. Inspiration usually comes from artists, famous authors. actors, and friends. It encourages me to create new things and hope for good results. This gives me a burning passion to try something for myself that may be different than I have tried before. Confidence does not necessarily have to come from myself, but from someone who has confidence in me. It can even be an author that encourages writers to hang in there. This is essential to me as I am writing. I am willing to do things out of the box with confidence.

Determination is my drive to reach my goal, accomplish my mission, see what lies ahead. This is exciting especially after I start and I can see where I want to go next.  The support comes from those closest to me like my husband, siblings and parents. Without support, I do not think that I would want to write half as much as I do now. My family expresses interest in my writing and it pushes me to work harder and longer. I do not want to give up when they support me. I think if it came down to it, support would be the only thing that I truly need for the best writing experience because it impacts my inspiration, confidence, and determination.

For reading time, I would prefer a brighter light to help me stay awake and alert as I read. Music is not an option because I will most likely become disengaged in reading. I need to be positioned in a chair that provides good back support. This can either be upright or in a reclining position where it is still easy for me to read. Generally I try not to eat and read because I am trying to read and make notes and I do not like getting the pages greasy. Really, I am not very successful when I read and eat because my focus is shifted onto the food. A water would be the only good beverage for me to have because I am not distracted. Everything must be still when I read, nothing can move, not even me. I would prefer to be by myself where I can truly be engaged in reading.

For writing, I would prefer a lower lighting setting with soft, instrumental music. I need a chair for good posture to write well. Coffee would be the best option for me because the smell is inspiring to me. I like to stay still even when I write but I may fidget a little as I am trying to make a sentence or phrase just right. I love being around others when I write whether I know them or not.

The ideal place to get lost in reading would be a monastery or a prayer garden. I think I would prefer to read outside on a nice day. It would be extremely peaceful and I can be focused on reading.

I like the coffee shop setting for concentrated writing. I can have a nice cup of coffee, snack, music, comfy or firm chair, with people nearby. With writing, I do not get as distracted when others are chatting. I love the atmosphere coffee shops have. Even hearing the sound of the coffee machine is pleasing to my ears.
